Del Taco aims at fast casual segment with 'Epic Burrito' launch

Del Taco seems to have Chipotle in its target with today's launch of its Epic Burritos line; three new burritos that range from 14 to 18.5 ounces in weight and each priced at $4.99.

According to the company, Epic Burritos feature a new, authentic tortilla with buttery flavor notes, and are served wrapped in a silver foil wrapper. Varieties include:

Epic Fajita Burrito is inspired by a sizzling fajita platter and includes grilled chicken or steak, roasted vegetables, pinto beans slow-cooked from scratch throughout the day, cotija cheese, lime rice, black beans, sour cream and guacamole.
Epic Steak & Potato Burrito with grilled carne asada steak, Del Taco's signature Crinkle-Cut fries, chipotle sauce, bacon, grated cheddar cheese and sour cream.
Epic Chicken Chipotle Ranch Burrito includes marinated grilled chicken grilled, lime rice, chipotle and ranch sauces, bacon, grated cheddar cheese, lettuce, guacamole and hand-made pico de gallo salsa.
"Epic Burritos represent an epic change in Del Taco's menu strategy," said John Cappasola, chief brand officer, Del Taco LLC. "Burritos have been reframed by fast casual competitors who have increased guest expectations around size, flavor and variety. With Epic Burritos, we are satisfying those expectations with the same freshness and value proposition that defines the Del Taco brand, but with the convenience of a drive-thru and at a lower price point."

Del Taco is celebrating the launch by offering a free medium drink to guests who purchase an Epic Burrito between Nov. 11-20.

The Epic Burritos rollout follows the brand's August launch of the CrunchTada Tostada and CrunchTada Pizzas. All are part of the brand's new "UnFreshing Believable" marketing campaign.
